In this article, Professor Sun Litao, Professor Tang Yongming, Professor of the electronic College of Southeast University, Professor Zuo Wei, Professor of the school affairs committee, shared the experience of distance education in Chinese Universities during the outbreak of the new coronavirus.
2019 the novel coronavirus epidemic (COVID-19) pandemic easily broke through the national borders, which led to the global stagnation in just three months, and also proved the close ties between countries and regions. With the development of the epidemic, in order to effectively control the spread of the virus, China has implemented a nationwide suspension of classes, which has become an unprecedented large-scale experiment of online distance education.
With the closure of all campuses, China's Ministry of education has organized 22 online course platforms to develop diversified online teaching solutions. More than 24000 online courses, including 1291 national top-quality online open courses (selected by the Ministry of Education) and 401 national virtual simulation experiment courses, are open for universities to choose from.
In order to further understand the effectiveness of this large-scale online education, we recently conducted a statistical survey of Undergraduates in Southeast University, and received 39854 effective curriculum evaluation questionnaires. According to the feedback, about 50% of the students think that this online education method can complete the planned teaching objectives, and 46% of the students think that it can basically complete. It is worth noting that most students think that in addition to maintaining the continuity of normal courses, the teachers also help them reduce the mental pressure generated in the isolation process and spread the positive energy to overcome the epidemic (see Figure 1).
However, the score of "can self-discipline and focus on Online Courses" is relatively low, which also means that students need to improve their self-discipline and concentration under the interference factors of unstable network speed, noise of daily life in the family environment, lack of professional equipment and so on.
At the same time, the students suggest that the combination of video teaching, live teaching and more online interaction can increase students' participation, which can reduce the impact of these adverse factors to a certain extent. There are also many students suggested to use a unified teaching platform with playback function and reasonable and appropriate assignment.

This questionnaire survey shows that teachers need to adapt to online teaching, which is totally different from the traditional classroom teaching environment. At present, the common practice of online teaching is to simply and directly transfer the traditional classroom teaching content and methods to the Internet. However, in the absence of face-to-face perception and interactive communication in the classroom, teachers need to work harder on the preparation, innovation and design of online courses in order to improve students' attention and efficiency. At the same time, teachers can patiently guide students from passive recipients to active learners through interactive Q & A, online testing, speech reports and public discussions.
In the near future, we expect that the wide application of 5g and artificial intelligence technology will help to break through the limitation of time and space, realize the rapid replication and transmission of information, optimize teaching resources, enrich demonstration tools and greatly improve the network speed.
In addition to online courses, doctoral and final year undergraduate students must complete thesis projects, which are often more challenging. In addition to the research directly related to epidemic prevention, all other activities of data collection, field sampling or field investigation that need experimental support must be suspended. This not only means the postponement of the experiment, but also the proper preservation of some sensitive samples, as well as the daily necessary maintenance of large and expensive equipment.
Therefore, schools should also quickly develop and implement special measures for laboratory maintenance under such circumstances of forced long-term shutdown. Thanks to a large number of online libraries, online archives and online databases, theoretical research and social science research are relatively less affected. The related calculation and simulation work in scientific research can be completed by online task submission of home computer or supercomputer. Literature retrieval, data analysis and thesis writing are almost unaffected. Tutors can guide students through regular online group meetings. In a positive way, postgraduates can invite members of the Defense Committee more freely and save time and travel costs. Tutors can also adjust the research projects of Undergraduates in the last year according to their needs, so that they can carry out and complete them smoothly at home or in other ways.
Although the novel coronavirus pneumonia epidemic has seriously affected the normal education process, universities can take advantage of this hitherto unknown opportunity to identify problems and deficiencies, and accelerate the transformation of online education through innovative curriculum content, advanced technology and effective management. We must also turn this emergency into an opportunity to further promote international cooperation and build a global online education network that can share experiences, knowledge and resources with each other.
