University's 1988 Jiajun: fragmented memory of diet in Southeast University

Hits: 3896854 2020-05-02

From the late 1980s to the early 1990s, I studied in the Department of architecture of Nanjing Southeast University, nearly 30 years from today. Zhang Ailing said in the story of the Golden Lock: "the moon in the old people's memory 30 years ago is happy, bigger, round and white than the moon in front of them. However, after 30 years of hard work, looking back, no matter how good the moonlight is, it's also a little sad. " I am not an old man at present, and I have no impression of the moon 30 years ago. All I can remember in my mind is only a little memory of eating and drinking, except for the affection of Shien and my classmates, and all of them are happy, not sad. In those years, I lived in wenchangqiao dormitory area on the east of taipingbei Road, and the most frequent one was the third canteen. The third canteen is close to the boys' building. It is the largest one. It is as spacious as the auditorium and can hold at least thousands of people. Windows are limited. It's common to line up for 20 minutes. Breakfast is generally porridge, fried dough sticks, cake, steamed bread, vegetables only salty bitter dried radish and bean curd. Lunch and dinner are rich. The common big pot vegetables are cauliflower, potatoes, cowpeas, rape and so on. They are mixed with some meat slices or minced meat, and scrambled eggs with tomatoes, about 30 to 50 cents a share.
There is a large piece of braised pork, about a finger thick, fat more thin less, can satisfy the appetite, quite popular with boys, so the students who are tall and fat often get the nickname "big meat". The quality of stir fried pork liver with cucumber slices, stir fried shredded pork with winter bamboo shoots, sliced pork intestines and other items is higher, about 80 to one yuan per share. There is a special window for stewed vegetables, selling beef with sauce, pig's ears, and braised chicken legs, which are called by weight. In winter, I sometimes sell carrots to cook mutton, which makes my head burst. Girls seldom go to the third canteen. There is a second canteen next to the buildings where they live. It's much smaller than the third canteen. It seems that the dishes are more exquisite. The shatangyuan dormitory area opposite the South Gate of the school has an independent canteen, which mainly serves graduate students. I don't remember going to the second canteen for dinner, but I haven't been to the shatangyuan canteen once.
At that time, everyone prepared their own enamel rice pots and stainless steel spoons. They usually beat the rice and went back to the dormitory, eating while walking. By the time they entered the door, they had already eaten half of it. Sitting down in the dining room and eating slowly, many of them are lovers, often sharing a basin, full of affection and honey. At that time, people were more reserved, and could not see the spectacular scene of feeding each other in today's college canteen. The distance from the dormitory to the teaching area is very short, but it needs to go through two streets, Taiping North Road and Chengxian street. Within a few hundred meters along the way, there are small restaurants and various gears. It is the students' food paradise.
Most of them are noodle shops and noodle stands. They mainly sell the common small boiled noodles in Nanjing. Cook the noodles in a big pot until they are seven or eight ripe. Then put them into a small pot, add vegetables, shredded meat or eggs, sausages, and then cook them for a while. The lowest meat noodles and egg noodles are 80 cents a bowl, the sausage noodles are one yuan, the highest three fresh noodles (including sausage, meat noodles and eggs) are one yuan and five, and at the same time, three Liang food stamps need to be added - I remember that the food stamps were officially abolished when I graduated. A noodle shop once got a batch of small eggs from somewhere, and made a promotion. The price of each bowl of egg noodles was reduced to 60 cents, which attracted a large number of diners. The scene was very hot.
The most common gear around the school is the wonton burden, which is carried by a shoulder pole. One is an iron pot, the other is a wooden cabinet. The iron pot is like Taiji, which is separated in the middle and used to cook water and wonton. The wooden cabinet is equipped with several small drawers, in which are large bowls filled with meat, pasta and seasoning bottles, and the firewood is split below. In addition, there is a small square table and two or three very narrow benches, which is a complete kitchen and dining room anytime and anywhere. This kind of wonton skin is very thin, with only a little meat filling inside. In the soup, add diced mustard mustard and shrimp skin. It's soft and can be eaten directly without chopsticks or spoons. It tastes good. In the past few years, a funny song "drinking wonton" was spread on the Internet. It was sung in Nanjing dialect, vividly reproducing the scene in memory. One of the lines "a want spicy oil" is more familiar.
Duck blood soup is also a special product of Nanjing. It's tender, smooth and delicious, but it didn't seem to have any fans. There are fried screws for sale in summer. You can buy a big bag for one or two yuan and eat it with toothpicks. It's delicious. There are no snacks except beef jerky, biscuits and sugar. There are few drinks, usually only yogurt, soda, cola, Sprite are not common. At that time, the materials were still relatively scarce, almost everyone was shy in their pockets, but they seemed to be hungry and thirsty in the true sense that everything they ate and drank was fragrant. There are only two or three decent restaurants nearby. When a classmate has a birthday or the end of the semester, they will raise money to have a meal. At that time, the standard of AA system was about 10 yuan per person. Eight roommates in a dormitory went together, enough to eat a dozen dishes, plus a few bottles of beer. At that time, everyone was very drunk, and it was easy to get drunk. When drunk, they would talk a lot and talk a lot.
There is a small street in the north of Wenchang bridge. There are several delicatessen shops and baozi shops in the street. Occasionally, half a salted duck or a steaming steamed bun with food are bought, which is full of flavor. Go south to Changjiang Road and Zhujiang Road. There are more restaurants, but most of them are not affordable for us. I only remember a small restaurant with good pot stickers for beef. Go south along Taiping Road to Confucius Temple. It's another world. There's plenty of food. It's tempting, but you can't go there often. Otherwise, you can only drink the West and north wind in the second half of the month (according to the current saying, it should be "eating earth").
After graduating from University, the number of trips to Nanjing is not much. Occasionally, I would go back to my alma mater for a meeting. Most of them stayed in the durian hotel. Sometimes, I would deliberately dodge the dinner arranged by the organizer and sneak into the street nearby for a bowl of noodles or duck blood soup. After such a long time, the shops around the school have been renovated many times, and the gears on the roadside have all disappeared. Of course, it is impossible to find the flavor of that year again. However, the warmth in the memory has never been reduced. (Note: original text, illustration from the Internet)
