In the manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries, silicone oil is opening up new application scenarios. By compounding vinyl silicone oil with nano SiO ₂, an electrolyte additive has been developed, which can form a 0.8nm thick SEI film on the negative electrode surface. This structure increases the battery cycle life from 500 cycles to 1200 cycles, while also increasing the first cycle Coulombic efficiency from 78% to 92%.
More cutting-edge research focuses on silicone oil-based solid electrolytes. A flexible electrolyte with an ionic conductivity of 1.2 × 10 ⁻ S/cm was developed by combining polyether modified silicone oil with LiTFSI salt. In BYD's blade battery prototype, this material can still maintain a conductivity of 0.5mS/cm at -20 ℃, while reducing the interface impedance to 1/5 of traditional electrolytes. This performance breakthrough indicates that silicone oil will play a key role in the next generation of energy storage technology.
