Types and Applications of Modified Silicone Oil
Silicone oil, as an important organic silicon compound, has a wide range of applications in multiple fields. Among them, modified silicone oil not only retains the basic characteristics of dimethyl silicone oil such as high and low temperature resistance, weather resistance, demolding, and hydrophobicity by introducing different organic groups, but also endows it with new properties, thus meeting the needs of more specific applications. This article will provide a detailed introduction to several common modified silicone oils and their application fields.
1. Amino modified silicone oil
Amino modified silicone oil, also known as amino silicone oil, is a polydimethylsiloxane containing amino groups in its side chains or end groups. This silicone oil is widely used as a textile softening agent due to its good adsorption and compatibility. When amino silicone oil is emulsified into micro lotion by appropriate surfactant, it can be used for fabric finishing to increase the softness of fiber materials, and is suitable for various textile finishing. In addition, amino silicone oil can also be used as a cosmetic additive, coating additive, resin modifier, and brightener.
2. Epoxy modified silicone oil
Epoxy modified silicone oil is a type of silicone oil containing epoxy groups in the side chains or end groups of polydimethylsiloxane. The use of this type of modified silicone oil can improve the elasticity of fabrics. When used in combination with polyether modified silicone oil, the finished fabric has better softness and also has characteristics such as wrinkle resistance and wash resistance. Mixing with amino modified silicone oil can give the fabric a better hand feel.
3. Polyether modified silicone oil
Polyether modified silicone oil is a polydimethylsiloxane containing polyether groups (such as polyoxyethylene, polyoxypropylene, etc.) in its side chains or end groups. Due to the hydrophilicity of polyether groups, polyether silicone oil exhibits good water solubility, and there will be no problems such as emulsion breaking or oil drifting during use. Polyether silicone oil can improve the moisture absorption performance of fabrics after finishing, increase the moisture absorption, anti-static, and easy stain removal of fibers or fabrics. Therefore, polyether silicone oil is widely used in clothing softeners, cosmetics, shampoo, and as a stabilizer of polyurethane foam as a surfactant.
4. Hydroxyl modified silicone oil
Hydroxyl modified silicone oil is a polydimethylsiloxane containing hydroxyl groups in its side chains or end groups. This type of modified silicone oil can be used as a fiber treatment agent, automotive polishing agent, coating additive, etc. The combination of hydroxyl modified silicone oil and amino silicone oil for fiber treatment can increase durability and prevent detachment during washing.
5. Other modified silicone oils
In addition to the common modified silicone oils mentioned above, there are many other types of silicone oils, such as:
Alcohol hydroxyl modified silicone oil: Polydimethylsiloxane terminated with alcohol hydroxyl groups or containing alcohol hydroxyl groups in the main chain.
Phenolic hydroxyl modified silicone oil: Polydimethylsiloxane with phenolic hydroxyl end caps or containing phenolic hydroxyl groups in the main chain. The phenolic groups in the molecule have high reactivity and heat resistance.
Liuji modified silicone oil: a polydimethylsiloxane containing Liuji groups in its side chains or end groups, which can undergo free radical addition reactions with organic silicon compounds containing unsaturated bonds under the action of ultraviolet light and photopolymerization initiators. It is widely used in anti stick isolation coatings and release agents.
In addition, there are polydimethylsiloxane polyether block copolymer modified silicone oils, alkyl and polyether co modified silicone oils, alkyl ether polyether silicone oils, epoxy based polyether silicone oils, amino polyether block silicone oils, glycerol ether based silicone oils, phosphate based silicone oils, sugar based polyether silicone oils, beet base silicone oils, etc. These silicone oils have different functional groups and therefore have special properties, but due to low demand, their market share is relatively small.
Application
Modified silicone oil has a wide range of applications in various fields due to its diverse properties:
Textile industry: used as a softener, anti wrinkle agent, to improve the texture and performance of textiles.
Paint ink: used as a wetting leveling agent and dispersant to improve the quality of coatings.
Daily chemicals, such as detergents, skincare products, etc., utilize their wetting and lubricating properties to provide a better user experience.
Agricultural chemicals: Utilize their low surface tension and excellent wettability to enhance the efficacy of agricultural chemicals.
Building materials: used as hydrophobic agents, release agents, etc.
Rubber and resin modification: used as a modifier to improve the performance of materials.
In summary, modified silicone oil plays an important role in multiple fields due to its diverse types and unique properties. With the advancement of technology and the continuous changes in demand, the application fields of modified silicone oil will continue to expand, providing high-performance solutions for more industries.
