Some time ago, I chatted with a friend. I said that I was learning ancient poetry recently. I recited one or two poems every week. I also bought some books about ancient poetry, and learned about the shape, rhyme and antithesis of ancient poetry.
My friend's face is incredible. What's the use of learning poetry at this age?
My friend's words remind me of an experience a few years ago, when I suddenly became interested in makeup modeling and ran to learn it for a while.
Before going to school, some friends said, what's the use of learning?
After I finished my study, my friend spoke more bluntly. Because I seldom make up.
Yes, so it's useless for me to learn ancient poems. I won't earn a bag of rice. I don't learn to make up much. I don't open a studio or make up myself.
Then I learned these, is it really useless?
I can tell you very responsibly that it's really useful. The reason why friends say it is useless is that they only consider the value of a thing from a very narrow perspective.
In fact, we should put everything on a larger scale and consider it from a more diversified perspective.
Take my study of ancient poetry as an example. I really can't achieve any definite purpose by studying ancient poetry. However, my study of ancient poetry is still very "useful".
How do you say that?
I use Xiong Yi's words:
First of all, Tang poetry can provide you with the best expression scheme for the life scene with lack of language.
Secondly, Tang poetry can enhance your feeling of beauty.
After learning for a while, I did feel the changes brought about by Tang poetry.
Before some hazy feeling, suddenly found the appropriate lines.
For example, every time I look at a book full of cabinets at home, I can't find a suitable word to describe my inner joy. After learning from Du Fu's "ecstasy of voluminous poems and books", all of a sudden, all the fuzzy feelings have their final destination.
Moreover, after seeing the scenery, and matching the corresponding verses, the charm index of the scenery will soar in an instant.
This is the charm of ancient poetry. It can really make you more able to express yourself, and also make you have a stronger sense of all things in the world.
Take my modeling as an example, the same is true.
Although I seldom make-up, I have basic aesthetic ability to make-up, understand color matching, and have basic perception to beauty. I also learned a lot about different industries, which provided more nourishment for my thinking.
Most of the time, it's useless. Instead of looking at it from a single dimension, we need to measure it from a broader perspective.
From useless to useful, it may be just a thought. It depends on whether you can enlarge and enlarge the view.

Is the most short-sighted approach
Why do many people talk about what to learn and what to do? It's useless to say it at the first time? In fact, it's because they have become utilitarians.
When they do anything, they feel that they must pursue a very clear result, and the result is best related to practical functions, such as fame and profit, as well as immediate effect.
Once it seems that it can not achieve obvious utilitarian effect in a short time, they will not hesitate to deny this matter.
What's the problem with this view?
Let me tell you a story first.
Liu weipeng, the author of dark time, once mentioned his experience in the book. He's a programmer, but he's been spending his spare time blogging, and it's not worth much if you look at it from a short-term utilitarian point of view. Blogging doesn't bring you any income or fame.
But Liu weipeng wrote it for eight years.
What happened eight years later? Eight years later, his scattered blog became a book. This book has a score of 8.4 in Douban, with more than 10000 people. This is a very rare score in many books in China.

Why don't I advocate a short-term utilitarian perspective?
Because there is a saying that the sun arch is a pawn, not a tribute to the Tang Dynasty. With the help of the sun Gong, you can't make a donation.
If only a very short time scale to see the problem, then this person's life is difficult to achieve great achievements.
Let me share my own experience.
In 2017, I became the signing author of the famous storyteller, Mr. Dashi, and began to write and disassemble the manuscript. In 2018, Mr. sledgehammer opened a new training camp. I actively applied to be a volunteer in the community and helped review and communicate during the course.
Later, as long as Mr. sledgehammer has something to do, I will take the initiative to do it with my heart. Someone asked me what's the point of doing this. Isn't it a waste of time?
I never felt it. From a utilitarian point of view, I can't bring any income from volunteering. Maybe many people are reluctant to do these trivial things.
But, from these trivial things, one by one, do a good job, to today, I have become the co-founder of hammer teacher.
We often say we should be long-term, what is long-term?
The real long-term doctrine can certainly jump out of the short-term utilitarian perspective, not pursuing immediate results, or even sometimes not pursuing results at all.
Take a long time to see, many things that didn't seem useful at the beginning will become useful in the end, and even determine the key direction of your life.
The longer you think about things, the less predictable your future will be.
Jump out of the narrow
You will encounter unexpected consequences
Luo Ji thought has a program that talks about a concept that benefits me for life: unintended consequences.
The unexpected consequence is that in the process of doing something and pursuing a certain result, people are likely to reap unexpected joy.
Luo Zhenyu mentioned that many important discoveries in the field of medicine since the 20th century, such as antibiotics, X-ray machines, antidepressants, chemotherapy drugs and so on, are all unexpected achievements in other research.
The same is true in other areas. For example, movable type printing and farming society are all unintended consequences.
Why are unexpected consequences? Because everything emerges from the bottom up. This is the underlying logic of the world.
In the book "from the bottom up", Matt Ridley profoundly expounds the world's everything from life, politics, technology, morality, business and other 15 fields, and how to emerge from the bottom up.
For example, the eye, not for the sake of seeing, is an accidental environmental mutation, with eyes. Then, the long evolution of mutual domestication with the environment began. From the perspective of our modern people, the eyes are indeed becoming more and more complex and advanced.
But these are not well designed results, but "unexpected consequences" emerging from the bottom up.
Once you have a beginning, you will continue to move forward involuntarily. You need to match your thoughts, behaviors and environment. You will constantly adjust yourself, and you may encounter more different opportunities.
Of course, these are all hindsight. In fact, you have no idea what you will encounter. The only thing you can master is that you want to do good things.
In 2018, I set up a creative group with more than 100 small partners. I shared my reading experience in the group, recommended books to you, and did these things without any utilitarian purpose.
My idea at that time was that I knew the right way to read, and I also knew a lot of good books. I hoped that more people would do well in reading.
But this group later brought me a lot of unexpected consequences.
For example, when I signed up for a certain platform, I had several small partners help me read the draft, so my signing was very smooth. For another example, later, there were small partners who cooperated with me to start classes. They not only worked with me, but also became very good friends...
These results, I never imagined at the beginning.
There are many times in life, many good results are never deliberately pursued by us, but because you have done something right, and then in action, there will be other good unexpected results, which will naturally emerge.
Does that mean that we should do all the good things?
Of course not.
To jump out of the refined egoism is to let us have a broader vision, to observe and measure something that we and others choose or take.
However, this doesn't mean that we should collect everything.
In the middle, there is a delicate balance. We should not only know how to focus, but also learn some skills that seem to be "useless" for the time being, do some good things that seem to be "useless" for the time being, and lay out a line for our life.
When you stop saying "it's useless to learn" and "it's useless to do", you will become more and more energetic. This is a plug-in that can grow faster.
The future depends on how much you've done in the past.
And those things that didn't seem to work at first may be the most awesome things.
