In an epidemic situation, Zhou Qi, a professor at the school of architecture of Southeast University, tried to switch between the university professor and the network anchor, "the former needs to be professional and precise, and transmit more information in a limited time, while the latter needs to keep excited and 'Hi', so that students can keep up with my rhythm."
What Zhou Qi pays more attention to is how to capture the students' feedback. "Unlike face-to-face teaching, you can't know what the students are doing at the first time when you are lecturing. Are you listening carefully? Do you really understand? "
Zhou Qi is facing the common challenge of all teachers and students participating in online teaching. Since the outbreak of novel coronavirus pneumonia, more than 200 million students nationwide have been studying online.
How is the online education test in this special "big test"? Recently, Zhejiang Provincial Consumer Protection Commission released a survey report on online education platform consumption experience and online questionnaire. According to the data, nearly two-thirds of the respondents have the willingness to consume online education, and the overall satisfaction rate of consumers with the online education platform is more than 60%. The teaching effect, teachers' strength and teaching reputation have become the preferred three board axe for everyone to choose courses.
How to let teachers and students through a network cable, a screen, a microphone resonance at the same frequency, to complete the transmission of knowledge and the exchange of ideas? Will online education usher in major changes after the outbreak? How can online education meet the needs of future intelligent education?
Online and offline effects may be quite different
If it is not novel coronavirus pneumonia, Zhou Qi can easily stand on the platform to attract more than 100 students' eyes, adjust their course content and inspire students' thinking at any time through their facial expression feedback.
"For online live teaching, we need to be more fully prepared. We need to think over and over again about the notes and tone." Zhou Qi said that before each live lecture, he would make full preparations several days in advance. In order to master the feedback of students in time and avoid turning the live teaching into a "self Hi", he asked students to feed back the questions raised before and in class in wechat group within 5-8 hours after class for discussion and exchange.
Wang Lei, an associate professor at the school of Marxism, Tianjin University, also feels the "love and pain" of online teaching. He leads students to a virtual experimental scene, learning the classic original text and answering questions online.
"Online teaching has advantages and disadvantages. The advantages are obvious. Students can learn freely and autonomously. They can ask questions on the message board at any time. Teachers can also recommend better online teaching resources to students to make up for the shortcomings of traditional teaching. But the biggest problem of online teaching is that it is not easy to organize teaching management. Teachers don't know what state the students at the other end of the network are in, whether they listen carefully or how well they accept it. Although there are interactive links, only some students participate in it. " Wang Lei said.
During the epidemic, online education is like a prism, which has attracted much attention and controversy. Xiong Bingqi, vice president of the 21st Century Education Research Institute, pointed out in an interview with the science and technology daily, "sometimes the personalization and interactivity of online teaching are relatively weak, resulting in learners' satisfaction with online teaching is not particularly high."
In Xiong Bingqi's view, online teaching is more about knowledge education, which includes survival education, physiological education and life experience. Students also need to learn to communicate and integrate into the team in the real campus environment.
"Online teaching will also make students rely too much on electronic products, which will affect their eyesight development. Previously, relevant departments proposed to protect the eyesight of teenagers and reduce the dependence of schools on electronic teaching. But now it is a special period, the school vigorously carried out online teaching, relaxed the control of students' online time. " Xiong Bingqi said.
Network teaching is not suitable for all majors
During the epidemic period, enterprises engaged in online education are also facing industry reshuffle. Affected by the epidemic, 7924 new enterprises engaged in online education in China increased from January 1, 2020 to March 31, 2020, a 28% decrease compared with the same period in 2019, the relevant person in charge said. In the same period, 1901 online education enterprises were cancelled.
"This epidemic will change the world and the pattern of education," said Professor Gong Peng, Dean of Tsinghua University's School of science and head of the Department of earth system science. If the epidemic continues, people will find that in some areas, online universities may be able to replace physical universities. Many subjects may not need to spend a lot of time on campus, such as literature, history, philosophy, foreign language, mathematics and other majors with low demand for experimental courses, you can choose online teaching. Students are scattered around the world to participate in online teaching. As long as they complete the credits required for a degree, they can be given the corresponding degree, and the number of corresponding undergraduates is not limited. However, if some subjects do not take the experimental courses, they will not be able to acquire some professional skills, and students of such majors can choose to study in school. "
In Zhou Qi's view, some experimental courses that need to be operated by hands, if online teaching is also carried out, first of all, the problem of information transmission stability should be solved. Colleges and universities can try to carry out online teaching of experimental content through virtual reality, 3D technology and other scientific and technological means, but this needs the support of 5g and other network foundations. The outbreak will bring more inspiration to the future development of online education.
Teachers' ability is the key to improve teaching quality
Network teaching is not simply to bring knowledge points to the network, but also contains a more open education concept.
Gong Peng said that during the outbreak, Tsinghua University's "ARM microcontroller and embedded system" course combines MOOC with independently designed open-source hardware, and at the same time to achieve orderly classes, a complete "real gun" student experiment course was opened. The course team independently designed and developed a set of portable creative teaching system, and opened all design materials and program source codes to the society, becoming open-source hardware, combining with online open MOOC, for learners and enthusiasts to learn independently and serve the society.
Zeng Ming, a lecturer in the course and an associate professor of Engineering Physics at Tsinghua University, said that Tsinghua has done many years of networking and digital teaching related work. Now, to promote online teaching is not only a test of previous investment, but also an incentive for teachers to keep up with the times in the form of teaching and research.
Xiong Bingqi believes that to carry out online education and intelligent education, we should not only make good use of technology, but also pay attention to people who use technology. To improve the quality of education and teaching, the key is to improve the professional and professional ability of teachers. Intelligent education platform has been established for a long time, but its utilization rate is low, partly because teachers lack enthusiasm and professional skills.
Xiong Bingqi said that to build a smart campus and smart classroom, we should also avoid using new technologies to strengthen traditional exam oriented education, such as face recognition technology to monitor students' expressions in class, which requires students to be fully focused. In fact, it is restricting students rather than liberating them. "To establish a platform system of intelligent education, schools and teachers should not only focus on improving students' scores, but also on improving the quality of teaching and bringing better education to students." Xiong Bingqi said.
