Since 2012, the report of devont's top 100 global innovation institutions in 2020 has entered its ninth year. Using data to analyze the commercialization potential of innovators and observe their innovation efforts, we have identified the top 100 most innovative institutions in the world from more than 14000 institutions.
According to the report, in the face of competition from disruptive enterprises, the share of large institutions in the global invention market has declined to 18%, and the global innovation environment is showing a trend of fragmentation. The report also shows that innovation is becoming a knowledge intensive collaborative activity, and the average number of invention institutions listed in each patent record is on the rise.
This year's report for the first time expanded the scope of analysis to the top 100 global innovation institutions, revealing three major trends in the innovation market:
The first trend: the share of the top 1000 institutions in the innovation market is shrinking
Six years ago, more than a quarter (27%) of the inventions in the DeWitt world patent index originated from the top 1000 institutions. Today, that proportion has fallen to 18 per cent. Now more and more patents are incubated by small enterprises, even individual entrepreneurs and inventors. Large enterprises must learn to better cooperate and explore non-traditional partnerships, otherwise there is a risk of falling behind.
The second trend: the importance of collaboration
Innovation is increasingly becoming a knowledge intensive activity, and with the integration of technology, basic science and engineering disciplines are more frequently combined with each other, so it needs to involve professional knowledge in many fields. This trend is highlighted by the fact that the average number of inventors listed in each patent record in the DWNT world patent index rose from 2.84 in 2014 to 2.99 in 2019.
The third trend: the strong will remain strong
In the past six years, the threshold for the selection of devont's top 100 innovation institutions has risen by more than a fifth (22%). Fujikura, HTC, immersion, microchip, Schneider Electric and Tencent are the six new institutions on the list this year. They are well equipped in the current competitive innovation environment. Since 2015, their average ranking has jumped to 250.
In this webinar, Mr. Qiu Mingjun, manager of solution Consulting Department of corewellian, will interpret more contents of the list for you and explain the key factors of being selected into the top 100 global innovation institutions.
