In recent years, China's rail transit construction is in a period of high-speed development, and with the expansion of the city to the suburbs, in order to improve urban transport, to achieve the optimization of urban structure adjustment. In 2019, the first year design course of graduate students of Architecture College "Research on integrated urban design of rail station" takes "suburb" as the theme, and discusses the TOD urban design strategy according to its characteristics.
Due to the differences in land use, industrial composition, population density and traffic structure with the central urban area, the density of rail lines and stations in the suburban area is lower, and the traditional circle development mode based on the walking influence area is also extensive and weak in the suburban area. In this context, based on the existing urban development experience and research results, combined with the characteristics of suburban areas, how to explore the TOD urban design strategy in accordance with local conditions, to form a point-to-face urban catalyst effect, to drive the development of the wider area around the suburban site, has become a problem worthy of further study.
Base overview: the course is located at baishuiqiao station in the east of Nanjing Jiangnan main city, which is subordinate to Qixia District. It is the transfer station between ningju intercity line (line S6) and Nanjing Metro Line 12. It is located at the intersection of NInghang road and Magao Road, with good location conditions. It is a portal station connecting Nanjing and Jurong, and its main functions are business and residence.
The topic is divided into three groups to discuss different themes and types of suburban TOD design.
Tod 2050 Wang Hao, Pang Jiaqi, Li Yiyao
Design Description: as a topic of suburban Tod, we should first answer what is the ideal suburban lifestyle. Different from some suburbs actively chosen by the middle class in the western world, the current suburban living mode has more forced meanings: long-distance commuting, traffic congestion, environmental pollution, non-human scale, lack of vitality under the urban functional zoning mode Under the background of the formation of urban agglomerations, cities will be further concentrated and expanded, suburban life should have both urban convenience and rural comfort, and the arrival of the information age will also have a fundamental change in urban organization mode and work life style. Looking back on TOD as the representative theory of new urbanism, its core idea is still not out of date even in the future: the urban organization mode of mixed function and mixed diversity, the transformation from car oriented to people-oriented, the life style of short-distance commuting, smart growth and intensive land use, etc.
Obviously, TOD is a revolution rather than an improvement of industrial cities. In this case, we start from the connection of suburbs, and discuss the future oriented multi-level public and shared transport mode construction and the decentralized urban structure on the scale of base area. In this scale, the purpose of decentralization is to form a stronger Center on a larger scale, that is, the formation of urban agglomerations.
Design description of shared TOD Wei Shuyi and Qiu Jianyu: Based on the preliminary analysis, this design found that the development redundancy caused by the tide of people flow and the problem of "circle level - influence level" caused by special location existed in the suburb on different time scales. By analyzing the concept of "sharing" into two methods of "sharing economy" and "sharing space", we can solve the problems of the suburban line in three influence circles. So that the site can clearly solve the traffic connection at different time points, but also can make the development space maintain efficient use in different time periods, so as to improve its business opportunities and community vitality.

Design Description: This design starts from the challenge of the era of motor vehicles - the conflict between walking and main roads, and the increasingly bad walking environment in the city. It aims to explore how to transform the perspective of vehicle to that of pedestrian, and provide free and comfortable walking space for people in the city. The main contradiction focus of the base is the road intersection. The center of the street is not only in the position of two line transfer, but also passing through the road, which splits the original complete plot and shortens the walking space. Based on this, the plan aims to establish an integrated slow traffic network, break the traditional linear slow traffic space along the city road, and form a free and comfortable surface, three-dimensional and three-dimensional integrated chronic system. Clear up the city boundary, turn the plot into a free flowing and shuttle three-dimensional Park, open to the surrounding citizens.
